ACSO annual meeting update no. 2

There were a significant number of prostate cancer poster presentations today (Saturday), many giving information about small Phase II clinical trials of investigational drugs in advanced and hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC).

Guidelines on PSA doubling time

An article in the June issue of the Journal of Urology provides guidelines from a PSA Working Group defining criteria related to the calulation and application of PSA doubling times in monitoring biochemical recurrence and for stratification of patients in clinical trials.

Vitamin D has no impact on prostate cancer risk

Researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute have found no link between vitamin D concentrations in the blood and probability of prostate cancer in men. They had tracked the vitamin D concentrations in the blood of 749 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and 781 men who did not have the disease.

Investigational drug may slow rate of bone breakdown

According to a press release from Merck & Co., an investigational agent called odanacatib (MK-0822) may be able slow the rates of breakdown and rebuilding of bone (”bone turnover”) in patients with metastatic prostate and breast cancers. Phase III clinical trials are planned in both disease states.
