And I thought I had it rough: Working to raise awareness of prostate cancer I once put on blue laces and trudged
around the hospital. Now comes word of an even more strenuous event.
Beginning on April 19, 2009 four intrepid men will launch from Western Australia. Over an estimated 60 to 70 days they will row to Mauritius. In case you’ve forgotten, Mauritius is just past the island of Rodrigues, which is right off the island of Madagascar!!! Mauritius is 3,500 miles across the Indian Ocean from Australia!!!
Why are they doing it? To raise awareness of prostate cancer. The four are a team working under the banner of Rowing for Prostate that has set out to raise funds for the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The truth is that The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink is not surprised with the news. For quite some time The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink has been keeping a close eye on lands down under. It has been aware, for instance, that Australia is home of a prostate cancer awareness event known as Movember. And that New Zealand is the home of Paul Caffyn, the one and only human to circumnavigate AUSTRALIA by one-man sea kayak!!! It comes as no surprise to us that we have arrived at an amalgamation of prostate cancer awareness and psychotically difficult sea sports.
The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink hopes that Rowing for Prostate will inspire men and women the world over to mix and match awareness events with all sorts of athletic shenanigans. And to the four man crew: steady at the oars, lads, and yes, you’re absolutely right … those Indian Ocean sharks eat nothing but plankton!
The “New” Prostate Cancer InfoLink will bring periodic updates about the fate of crew. In the meantime, for more information please log on to www.rowingforprostate.com, join the gang on its Rowing for Prostate group on Facebook, or send email to mission control at rowingforprostate@gmail.com.
