The recent release of the joint ASCO/AUA guideline on chemoprevention of prostate cancer with 5-ARIs has necessitated several updates to the web site, including significant modifications to:
- The main Risk and Prevention page
- The page on Finasteride and the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial
In addition, we have added a page entitled The prevention of prostate cancer with 5α-reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs), specifically addressing interpretation of the new guideline.
We should, in addition, mention the addition of pages dealing very specifically with
- The relative normality of finding prostate cancer in the prostate of any man over 55 today and
- The natural history of the conservative management of prostate cancer
These two pages are highly relevant to the potential of active surveillance or watchful waiting as appropriate management strategies for men with low risk, early stage prostate cancer (particularly men of 75 or older and men with a relatively short projected life expectancy because of other comorbidities).
