The National Comprehensive Cancer Network has updated its prostate cancer management guidelines to give a category 1 recommendation for clinical use of sipuleucel-T (Provenge) in the treatment of selected patients.

According to a report from Reuters and a media release on the Amgen web site, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has approved denosumab (Prolia®) for marketing in Europe.

A recent article in Urology suggests that patients in the SEARCH database who would theoretically have been eligible for active surveillance (AS) for low-risk prostate cancer were actually at increased risk for recurrence if they were of older age, obese, or had been exposed to Agent Orange.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) has announced plans for a National Proactive Surveillance Network (NPSN) designed to reduce overtreatment of prostate cancer patients to better direct resources to those patients with more aggressive, life-threatening varieties of this disease.

Yesterday, GTx, Inc. announced initial results of their Phase III clinical trial designed to test the effect of toremifene 20 mg on the prevention of prostate cancer in men with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HG-PIN).

A new study has shown that the generically available, oral, bisphosphonate risedronate (Actonel) can prevent bone loss and related effects in patients receiving hormonal therapy for prostate cancer.

We note that the second Phase III clinical trial of abiraterone acetate — in asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who have not had either chemotherapy or ketoconazole therapy — is now fully enrolled (as of last Friday).

We know that statin therapy appears to lower risk for prostate cancer and to increase the overall survival of men diagnosed with prostate cancer. However, what we don’t know (yet) is whether statin therapy during and after specific types of treatment has prostate cancer-specific outcome benefits.

There’s a new article in the radiation therapy literature suggesting a direct correlation between prostate volume and risk for severe, acute, genitourinary toxicity when prostate cancer patients with large-volume prostates are treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
