One of the great unanswered questions (so far) is whether adding a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (a TKI) to docetaxel + prednisone can improve outcomes for men with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).

Vitamin D insufficiency is currently defined as a serum level 25-hydroxy vitamin D that is less than 75 nmol/l. (And there are many who think that a higher minimum level might be appropriate.)

A new article has stimulated an important and public discussion about how to report the quality of outcomes of patients who receive a radical prostatectomy (RP) — and therefore how to communicate the probabilities of specific outcomes of a certain quality to new patients considering radical prostatectomy as a first-line treatment option.

In an announcement this morning that will shake up the innovation end of the cancer radiotherapy business, Accuray, Inc. (which makes and markets the CyberKnife system for stereotactic body radiation therapy) has agreed to acquire TomoTherapy, Inc. (which integrates CT imaging with conformal radiation therapy).

Dendreon’s production ramp-up for sipuleucel-T (Provenge®) is on track, the company says, with manufacturing expected to be up to full speed by year’s end. All three US-based manufacturing plants will be shipping by then, and treatment with Provenge should be available at hundreds of more locations, according to a Reuters report last week.

One of the problems with the PSA test is that it identifies a possible risk for prostate cancer in many men each year who are subsequently shown — by prostate biopsy — to be at no risk for the actual clinical condition.

A while back now the research group at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center initiated a Phase II clinical trial of a drug called tandutinib in the treatment of men with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who had already had taxane-based chemotherapy.

The standard form of treatment for a man with a rising PSA after a first-line radical prostatectomy (RP) is salvage radiation therapy (with or without a period of androgen deprivation). However, an Italian group has just published pilot data on the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) as salvage therapy after RP.

A team of researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center are claiming that they have identified an important target that may lead to the development of effective treatments for one aggressive type of prostate cancer. The target is a gene called SPINK1.

Two recent papers from a clinical research team at the University of Western Ontario in Canada have offered us insights into the appropriate usage of cryoablation as salvage therapy for men with progressive (recurrent) prostate cancer after first-line treatment for localized and locally advanced prostate cancer.

Full data from the randomized, double-blind, multi-center, Phase III clinical trial comparing denosumab to zoledronic acid in the prevention of skeletal-related events in men with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) has now been published in The Lancet.

Many prostate cancer patients will recognize statements made by other patients and reported in a study just published in Cancer Nursing and also available on the Medscape Oncology platform. Interestingly this study comes from a group of Norwegian nurses who built an online e-mail support system for their prostate cancer breast cancer patients.

According to a media release from Bavarian Nordic, issued on Monday, the company has initiated a new, randomized, multi-center, Phase II clinical trial of its investigational immunotherapeutic agent, Prostvac®, in men with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).
