According to a media release from Adamis Pharmaceuticals, the company has started to enroll patients into a Phase I/IIa clinical trial of APC-100 in men with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).

Centers apply a variety of inclusion criteria in evaluating the eligibility of patients for management using active surveillance (AS) protocols. The applicability of an immediate, transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided re-biopsy is recommended by a number of centers, but there is no consensus about the need for re-biopsy at this time.

As we have noted several times before, databases in selected European nations (most particularly the Scandinavian countries) allow for the possibility of highly accurate analyses of information on the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of prostate cancer (and other disorders) over time based on data from very large numbers of people.

The national rates of participation in clinical trials by cancer patients have never been particularly high. The National Cancer Institute states that, “less than 5 percent of adults diagnosed with cancer each year will get treated through enrollment in a clinical trial.”

Clinical guidelines issued by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommend that prostate cancer patients being treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) — either alone or in combination with radiation therapy — should be screened for osteoporosis and treatment to prevent deterioration of bone health associated with a decline in bone mineral density.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have queried their large, nearly 20-year-long database of men who have undergone radical prostatectomy in an attempt to assess the correlation between positive surgical margins at the time of surgery and subsequent occurence of systemic disease or prostate cancer-specific mortality.

“Manserin” is a novel peptide originally derived from a larger secretory protein called secretogranin II. A newly published paper suggests that expression of manserin in human prostate cancer tissues may correlate with risk for clinically significant and progressive forms of prostate cancer.

Data reported earlier this year from the PIVOT study and separately from the long-term Scandinavian study have shown that the surgical treatment of prostate cancer in the patients enrolled in these trials showed no median prostate-cancer specific or overall survival benefit compared to watchful waiting in patients of > 65 years of age.
