A 17 percent potency rate post-surgery in one Swedish study

According to another media release issued on Sunday by the European Association of Urology, only 17 percent of a large cohort of Swedish men with prostate cancer who were potent prior to surgery were still potent 18 months post-surgery (whether they had nerve-sparing or non-nerve-sparing surgery). … READ MORE …

Small study shows no long-term benefit in preventing loss of erectile function

Data from a newly-published (but very small) randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial show no significant, clinical impact of sildenafil (Viagra®) taken once daily as a treatment to optimize retention of erectile function at up to 2 years after radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer. … READ MORE …

Sexual desire and sexual “bother” before and after radical prostatectomy

Experienced prostate cancer patients and advocates are well aware that patients’ attitudes to the importance of their sex lives are a critical factor in the decision process when treatment for localized prostate cancer has to be seriously considered. … READ MORE …

Sildenafil citrate, erectile function, and radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer

ADT and cognitive function — a review and pilot study

An article just published on line in the journal Urologic Oncology looks at the vexing problem of the degree to which extended periods on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) may have significant impact on the day-to-day cognitive functioning of at least a proportion of men with progressive forms of prostate cancer. … READ MORE …

Serial biopsies, sexual and erectile function, active surveillance, and related issues

There has long been a concern that having multiple biopsies over a period of time (for whatever reason) could be associated with a risk for decline in sexual and erectile function. However, as far as we are aware, there has never been any compelling evidence to support or deny this concern. … READ MORE …

Sexual function and serum T levels, before, on, and after 9 months of ADT

As many readers of this news service will be aware, good data on the recovery of libido and sexual function after a period of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are limited. We have long known that such recovery is variable, and we also know that it can take time, but sound data from a large cohort of patients has been “missing in action,” so to speak. A new paper by Ng et al. has now remedied this problem. … READ MORE …

Loss of ejaculatory ability is high after radiation therapy

Patients who have surgery as their primary treatment for prostate cancer know that after their surgery they will have lost the ability to ejaculate at orgasm — making orgasm feel very different to their prior experience. It has not been so clear that — over time — the same applies to most radiation therapy patients. … READ MORE …

Can erythropoetin improve post-surgical erectile function?

We want to specifically draw the readers’ attention to a report by Burnett et al. suggesting that pre-surgical treatment with a single dose of erythropoetin may be able to improve erectile function post-surgery. This small study would need to be replicated in a larger, double-blind, randomized study to offer conclusive data, but the potential is fascinating. (See the abstract of the original report or today’s news update for more information.)

Prostate cancer news update: Monday, September 15

Two new studies address issues related to erectile function and voiding function following radical prostatectomy:

  • The first deals with erectile and voiding function following cryotherapy in a contemporary group of patients
  • The second provides an interesting report on the potential of single-dose erythropoetin prior to radical surgery as a means to optimize post-surgical eretile function. … READ MORE …
