According to a recently published research letter, men with prostate cancer who live close to the Loma Linda proton beam radiation therapy (PBRT) center are five times more likely to choose PBRT for their treatment than are other men who live in California but don’t live close to Loma Linda! DUH!

Over the past 20 years there has been an explosion in the different ways that we use varied types of external beam radiation therapy for the treatment of localized and locally advanced forms of prostate cancer. Where is the newly diagnosed patient able to find a good, basic introduction?

It would be all too easy to get the idea — from the title and abstract of a recently published study — that proton beam radiation therapy (PBRT) was more effective than permanent seed brachytherapy in the treatment of men with low- and some intermediate-risk prostate cancers. This would be a very inappropriate conclusion.

ACR 03-12 is a Phase II clinical trial designed by the American College of Radiology to test the safety and efficacy of 82 GyE (Gray equivalent) delivered using conformal proton beam radiation therapy (PBRT) for the treatment of localized prostate cancer.

Over the years there have been almost no publications addressing the complications of proton beam radiation therapy (PBRT) among well-defined series of prostate cancer patients. With the number of PBRT centers now growing fast, good data on the side effects of PBRT are an urgent priority.

According to an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune on Monday, Scripps Health has partnered with others to develop a new proton beam radiation therapy center in San Diego. This would be the second PBRT center on the West Coast and supposedly it will be able to treat its first patients in 2013.
