ASCO commentary and update no. 3

There were probably over 100 posters related to prostate cancer presented at the ASCO meeting today (Sunday, May 31), so you will have to pardon us for not even attempting to report on all this vast variety of data. PCA3 and a novel pre-biopsy nomogram

There has been hope in some quarters that the prostate cancer gene 3 or PCA3 test would provide data so helpful that we could dispense with the need for PSA testing at all. However, The “New” Prostate Cancer Infolink has long suspected — for a variety of reasons — that this would not be the [...]

Making sense of the PCA3 test

The PCA3 or prostate cancer gene 3 assay was approved some time ago for commercial use in Europe. It has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. What are the real differences between this test and the PSA test that we are all more accustomed too?

PSA, PCA3, and prostate cancer diagnosis today

A new review just published in BJU International provides a current expert perspective on the roles of PSA and the much newer PCA3 test in the work-up and diagnosis of a patient suspected of prostate cancer. The entire article is available on line and will be a useful resource for many support group leaders and [...]

Wednesday’s prostate cancer update: November 12, 2008

In today’s reports, we include items on: The diagnosis and management of post-RP stress incontinence Another review of MRI in diagnosis of prostate cancer More on the potential of the PCA3 test in diagnosis of prostate cancer Results of early data on salvage LRP by a highly skilled team

In today’s update there is information about: Excess body mass and risk from prostate cancer death The potential role of the PCA3 test Focal treatment for localized disease using targeted photodynamic therapy

PCA3 appears to predict risk for extracapsular extension

According to an article by Whitman et al., so far only pre-published on line, the PCA3 urine test is capable of predicting risk for extracapsular extension in men with prostate cancer prior to radical prostatectomy.

The early morning news: Wednesday, October 1

A molecular urine assay for prostate cancer?

Anyone who has learned a reasonable amount about the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer has learned that the prostate specific antigen or PSA test is not a particularly good test for identifying or monitoring the status of men with active prostate cancer. It is simply better than anything else we have. Researchers have been [...]
