Eighth US proton beam radiation therapy center now open

We have previously referred readers to a series of articles on the growing number of proton beam radiation therapy (PBRT) centers in the US, most of which appear to be highly dependent on prostate cancer patients for their revenue and their economic viability.

According to an article in the Virginian-Pilot this morning, the new Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute is also now “open for business.” This new center, which is “free-standing” in the sense that it is not associated with a hospital or medical center, has raised additional questions about the motivations behind the rapid spread of PBRT as a treatment for selected types of cancer.

  1. Are there proton beam therapy locations in Michigan? If no, where is the closest? Are there any in Ohio?

  2. Dear Nancy:

As far as I am aware, the nearest proton beam radiation therapy center to you would be the Indiana University Health Proton Therapy Center in Bloomington, Indiana.

  3. Are there proton beam therapy locations in Tennessee? If not, where are the closest ones.

  4. There is no proton beam radiation therapy center in Tennessee at this time. The nearest one is probably the one in Oklahoma City. How good the Oklahoma City center is at treating prostate cancer is a very different question that you would need to research. We have not heard from any patients who have been treated at this center (so far).
