GE heads up $1 billion cancer detection and treatment plan

If you have a really innovative idea that might impact the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, now’s the time to get your proposal in to GE and its venture capital partners.

This morning GE announced a plan to collaborate with with four leading life sciences venture funds to offer:

  • A $100 million global challenge to developers of advanced cancer diagnostics
  • A $1 billion plan to beef up R&D investments in cancer detection and treatment over the next 5 years
  • A “super database” of information on clinical, pathology, therapy and outcomes data that can help drive new products.

GE’s initiative includes seed funding for academics, who can gain $100,000 for support for their work.

Yes, some of the early initiatives will be focused on breast cancer … but don’t let that stifle you imagination!

  1. Could my husband’s prostate cancer spread to me during intercourse before he was diagnosed?

  2. Dear Bev:

No. It is not possible for women to “catch” prostate cancer from their husbands. Only men can have prostate cancer, just as only women can have cervical or ovarian cancers.
