More on the screening, biopsy, treatment sequence

There is another iterestinng video discussion available on line on the Medscape web site … this one between Andrew Vickers, DPhil, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Sigrid Carlsson, MD, PhD, of the University of Göteborg in Sweden.

The discussion is very definitely focused on minimizing risk for over-treatment, and what the discussants argue is strongly in favor of the need to carry out individual testing, biopsies, and treatment on a far more clearly “risk-based” model.

Dr. Carlsson puts this strategy in very simple terms:

  • Screen those who need to be screened (screen the right people).
  • Biopsy the right people.
  • Treat the right people.
  • Treat the men who need treatment at high-volume centers.
