Expert opinion on key issues in the management of advanced prostate cancer

A prostate cancer-specific “expert opinion” by Howard Scher of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, published late yesterday on the Practice Update web site, deals with “Optimizing outcomes with what is available now: clinical trials to clinical practice”.

In this commentary, Dr Scher deals with three key topics related to the current and future management of advanced and high-risk forms of prostate cancer:

  • The current role(s) of combination regimens in late stage disease
  • Whether any of the drugs known to be effective in late-stage disease could actually have a curative impact in the management of a proportion of patients in an earlier disease setting
  • Whether we can actually find and demonstrate the accuracy of a surrogate endpoint for overall survival
